Disney Princesses are a Walt Disney Company franchise based upon fictional characters. The six original members of the franchise were Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, and Jasmine, who were later joined by Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, and Rapunzel. The first Disney Princess was Snow White, who made her debut in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937. These Princesses are either royal by birthright, marriage, or labeled a Princess for their heroism in the film.
Some have criticized Disney Princesses for being bad role models for young girls. They believe they often portray girls are being “damsels in distress,” requiring a male to rescue them. Some also believe that Disney Princesses also portray a negative body image for young girls. However, many also believe that young girls will eventually grow out of the Disney Princess stage, leaving little impact upon them.
